In Recognition of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
We acknowledge that we are privileged to work, live, and play on the traditional unceded territories of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations, whose presence here stretches back beyond measure. On this National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we reflect upon the profound injustices faced by Indigenous Peoples, both historically and in the present day. We recognize the deep wounds and the legacy of residential schools, and we commit to listening, learning, and taking meaningful actions towards reconciliation.
In our role as REALTORS®, we are entrusted with the responsibility of guiding individuals and families through the process of buying and selling real estate, land. In the world of real estate, land is more than just plots and properties; it’s a tapestry of histories, cultures, and legacies. We recognize that this topic is delicate and complex. We don’t claim to have answers, nor do we presume to understand the full depth of the pain and trauma associated with land dispossession.
As we navigate this responsibility, and sensitive juxtaposition between our jobs and the legacies of the Squamish and Lil’wat People, we approach our work with humility, respect, and a commitment to ensuring that Indigenous voices and perspectives are central to any conversations about their ancestral lands. One of our key commitments is to engage with local Indigenous leaders when negotiating tracts of land that hold significance to their communities. We believe that by working closely with them and focusing on their interests, we can ensure that their voices and perspectives are central to any discussions about their ancestral lands. This collaboration is not just about consultation; it’s about genuine partnership and mutual respect.
We pledge to be allies in the journey towards justice and healing, and we invite everyone to join us in this commitment. We invite you to learn about the Indigenous History of this area through the Matterport Virtual Tour Archive of UNCEDED – A Gallery at the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre. You will surely recognize some important local landmarks – this is a remarkable opportunity to experience them through a different lens. Check out the Mattertags (Description Tags) on the photographs for information about each piece.
Thank you to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre for allowing RE/MAX Sea to Sky Real Estate to help you preserve and archive this important gallery through our Matterport technology. Visitors to the SLCC can view this Gallery in person through October 8th, 2023.
